Local "Gouge"

Nothing official in this section, but you'll find some good local advice for boating around the area.

No guarantee is made or implied into the accuracy of any of the information listed!!

1.  The buoy marking the remains of the USS Massachusetts (BB-2) near Pensacola Pass is not on the wreck.  It is about 300 yards south, and the top of the wreck is often exposed or just inches under the surface.  The Battleship Massachusetts BB-2 has sunk more ships in the last 50 years than she did during her years on active duty.

2.  The tides for the local area vary greatly between locations so make sure you're looking at the correct table.  Tides listed for "Pensacola" (Measured at the Port) and "Pensacola Pass Entrance" are often hours apart.

3.  The rocks at Florida Point on the east side of the Perdido Pass Jetties are continuous to the end.  The "Gap" is not a gap.

4. The stretch of water between Big Lagoon State Park and Galvez Landing is a no wake area.  Many people do not acknowledge the limits and the marine patrol knows this.  They often set up speed traps near the Theo Baars Bridge.

5.  The 4th of July and Blue Angels Pensacola Beach airshow are incredibly popular events for boaters.  The local bays and passes will be full of boats.  Be ready for lots of foolishness on the water.

6.  Local pier fisherman are capable of throwing jigs and weights well over 150 yards.  Keep well clear of all piers and docks in the gulf and bays - especially from March through May when the cobia are normally running along the coast.
